What is Baptism?
Baptism is a sign of our union with God and
is symbolic of God’s washing away of all the
things that separate us from him. Baptism is
also a sign of our fellowship with Jesus who
himself was baptised in the River Jordan.
The sprinkled water in baptism carries with it
the meaning of cleansing together with the
profound mystery and wonder of God’s Spirit
planted within the one who is baptised. In
baptism we are linked so closely with Jesus
Christ that his life is at work in us.
We believe that in infant baptism the
blessings of God’s grace, bestowed through
faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and
Saviour, pass from one generation to the
next and identifying your child as a valued
member of the family of God. We pray that,
in God’s time, God will work in your child’s
life by his Holy Spirit so that your child will
come to have a living faith in Jesus as her or
his Lord and Saviour.
Portland Parish Church believes that those it
baptises should have the promise of a
Christian upbringing in the church through
Sunday School so that they can be expected
in due course to take for themselves the
promises made on their behalf and to
profess the faith in which they were
baptised.
