Blessing An alternative to infant baptism is the infant blessing service. The infant blessing service is a relatively new service in the Church of Scotland. This service also takes place at morning worship and follows much the same pattern as that for baptism, except the wording is different, the promise(s) are different, and no water is used. Some parents prefer a blessing service for their child; this may be because the blessing allows the child, in time, to come to his or her own decision on baptism, or it may be that they want to acknowledge the birth of their child and express thanks but are not yet ready to make the commitments asked of them in a baptismal service.
