Baptism for adults Baptism is a sign of our union with God as is symbolic of God’s washing away of all the things that separate us from him. Baptism is also a sign of our fellowship with Jesus who himself was baptised in the River Jordan. The sprinkled water in baptism carries with it the meaning of cleansing together with the profound mystery and wonder of God’s Spirit planted within the one who is baptised. In baptism we are linked so closely with Jesus Christ that his life is at work in us. The minister will baptise any adult, who seeking baptism makes a confession of faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour and has not previously been baptised. Adult baptism will generally follow a period of discussion as to what it means to be a follower of Jesus, this may be on a one to one basis with the minister or in a group setting. While it would be the norm to conduct an adult baptism during public worship there are instances when such baptisms may be conducted in private.
